Sports is the core of Special Olympics - but you don't need to be a super star to be a part of the fun! Special Olympics is designed so that every athlete can participate - no matter what your age, interest or skill level.

Special Olympics sports training and competition is open to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes aged 8 and older can train and compete. Children under 8 can train but not compete.

Check out our sports page to learn more about the sports we offer.

Special Olympics Athlete Code of Conduct

What else can I do in Special Olympics?

In addition to sports training and competition, Special Olympics also offer the Athlete Leadership Programme (ALPs), this Programme allows athletes to explore opportunities in role previously considered non-traditonal. Participation might come in the form of an athlete serving on the Board of Directors or local organising committee or it might find an athlete as a spokesperson, team captain, coach or official.

As athletes mature, they seek new challenges and look for ways to utilise the wisdom that comes from their life and Special Olympics experiences. ALPs initiatives are designed to provide those challenges and opportunities.

Check out our Athlete Leadership Programme page for more information.
