Ross Bragg

A request to referee at a swim meet in Nelson in 1993 led Ross Bragg to a 20-year career volunteering with Special Olympics New Zealand.

Now based in Auckland, Ross Bragg has provided expert guidance, technical advice, knowledge and support for our swimmers and staff. A qualified Swimming New Zealand National Referee and current member of the Swimming New Zealand Technical Advisory Committee, Ross has extensive officiating experience at the local, regional, national, and international levels in mainstream sport, Special Olympics and Paralympics. He is the only person in New Zealand to be involved with the three organisations at an international level.
While officially retired, Ross regularly officiates at national and international swim meets. He recently officiated at the 8th Oceania Swimming Championships in Samoa; Arafura Games, Darwin, Australia; the IPC Asian Paralympics Games in Guanzhou, China; IPC World Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands; 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece, national swim meets in Wellington, Whangarei and Hamilton, and an international meet in Guadalajara, Mexico, and attended his fourth Paralympic Games in London in 2012.
He has also officiated at previous Special Olympics Summer Games in Ireland in 2003 and China in 2007, and is Aquatics Technical Delegate in Dunedin at the Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games 2013.
Ross is a well-respected volunteer, official, mentor and friend of Special Olympics New Zealand’s athletes and supporters. Although his main involvement is swimming, he also assists with Special Olympics’ athletics, basketball and soccer.
Ross is a firm believer in following the correct procedures and rules, and his contribution to improving swimming within Special Olympics New Zealand has led the sport to be our most popular endeavour among athletes.
In 2013 Ross became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to swimming. It is fitting that he receives the Special Olympics New Zealand Distinguished Service Award for his services to our organisation.
