The Holdsworth Charitable Trust

The Holdsworth family has been long-term supporters of Special Olympics since the late 1980s. Through its generous support, Special Olympics New Zealand has been able to realise project goals, continue its growth and development, and see many of the recommendations from the ‘Cameron review’ to fruition.

The Holdsworth Charitable Trust has made an immeasurable contribution to Special Olympics in time and financial support. In 2013 grants from The Holdsworth Charitable Trust accounted for 10% of Special Olympics New Zealand’s total revenue.
Holdsworth Charitable Trustees Merrill and John Holdsworth have been instrumental in securing the future financial stability of Special Olympics New Zealand. Both have had successful business careers. In 2012 John retired after 25 years as Chairman of New Zealand-owned IT company Datacom, during which time the company grew to over 4000 staff with revenues of over $800 million.
In 2007 Merrill and John became inaugural members of Special Olympics New Zealand’s Finance and Audit Committee. Together with Robin Keall (Chief Financial Officer of Datacom Group) volunteering as Special Olympics New Zealand’s Treasurer, the Holdsworths established clear guidelines for the organisation’s fundraising, and recruited Datacom to provide back-end support for donations, and management systems.
John was instrumental in recruiting a new Chief Executive Officer for Special Olympics New Zealand in 2008 and the Holdsworth Charitable Trust has continued to financially support this position as part of its overall sponsorship of the organisation.
In addition to regular financial support the Holdsworth Charitable Trust has funded unique and innovative projects including Special Olympics New Zealand’s first promotional DVD, its online donation system, support for six athletes to attend the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games in Newcastle, Australia, the refurbishment of the Special Olympics Wellington bocce courts at Mornington Golf Club, team uniforms, and travel costs for Special Olympics Wellington team’s attendance to the 2012 Special Olympics Trans-Tasman Tournament in Cairns Queensland.
Both Special Olympics New Zealand and Special Olympics Wellington believe that the Holdsworth Charitable Trust is an outstanding supporter of our organisation and an extremely worthy recipient for a Distinguished Service Award.
