Youth volunteers

More and more young people are putting their hands up and volunteering in the community. At Special Olympics New Zealand we are putting our hands together to applaud them! We love our young volunteers!

We think young people can do anything. We have youth volunteers who give speeches about Special Olympics at school. We have others who work as coaches and more who are cheerleaders. Some young volunteers help raise money.

At the Special Olympics 2009 National Summer Games, we had more than 100 young volunteers from local schools, colleges and Scout groups. They sang, presented medals and led teams in during the march of the athletes at the Opening Ceremony.

Encouraging mainstream students at secondary schools to support Special Olympics athletes during organised events is an important part of our National School Programme. Not only is it a fun thing to do, it helps students understand intellectual disability and become aware of the ability of their schoolmates.

What kinds of things do kids do?

When the Special Olympics basketball team from Papanui High School needed to raise money to go to the Special Olympics New Zealand 2009 National Summer Games, the rest of Papanui High School got together and had a contest to see who could raise the most money to help them get there. Sammy Kahn, one of the basketball players, gave a speech to the whole school to thank them as he accepted the cheque!

And don’t forget, if you are a young person you are a future policymaker, educator or business leader of this world. If you open your mind now to Special Olympics and the achievements of athletes at your school, think of the changes you can make in the world when you’re the one in charge.

One of our young volunteers is an assistant coach. Max Stroomer was featured on TVNZ Close Up.

Another of our young volunteers was on TVNZ Good Sorts for her choreography - she taught a bunch of athletes how to dance!
