James Farrell

James Farrell’s involvement with Special Olympics has already spanned two decades, and he’s now looking forward to giving back to the organisation as a Global Messenger.

The Special Olympics Hawkes Bay athlete first got into Special Olympics through his volunteer work with Riding for the Disabled, where he discovered his passion for working with and riding horses.  That passion is clearly matched with talent – James is proud to have three Special Olympics World Summer Games gold medals for equestrian, which he won at the 2003 World Summer Games in Ireland.

“I enjoy the sports that Special Olympics has given me the opportunity to take part in –equestrian,  football and golf. My favourite sport is golf, which is what I am now playing with Special Olympics Hawkes Bay.”

As well as his involvement with Special Olympics, James gives back to the community through his involvement with Kiwanis, helping out with local events and fundraising. He also works as a groundsman at Lindisfarne College and is a keen rugby and wrestling fan.

Through his new role as Global Messenger James hopes to share with others the enjoyment that sport and Special Olympics has given him.

“I am honoured at being selected for the Athlete Leadership Programme. It is a great opportunity to be able to take part in training and learn to speak to various organisations about what Special Olympics has to offer. I have certainly appreciated the opportunities it has given me all these years.”
