Bay of Island’s Special Olympics Equestrian rider Alex Goldsack has been involved in his local programme for the past 11 years.

Originally starting with Special Olympics as a Schools student Alex transitioned in the club scene and has loved it ever since. And has attended three National Summer Games.

Getting a Silver medal at last year’s 2017 National Summer Games in Wellington was one of Alex’s highlights to date.

As a keen rider Alex competes in the Dressage, Working Trail and English Equitation and will compete in these three disciplines in Abu Dhabi at the 2019 World Summer Games.

Alex is also a very keen swimmer competing for his local BOI club at most swim meets in the Upper North Island region.

Riding Arab horses is what he is most looking forward to about the upcoming event, as well as meeting people and going to new places.

Alex trains 2 or 3 times a week to get himself ready for Abu Dhabi.

The enjoyment of horses is what Alex feels he and his role model Equestrian Coaches have most in common and what they have taught him.

Alex believes that working more to save more money would change the world and make it a better place.

And getting new sunglasses to protect his eyes from the sun is how Special Olympics Healthy Athletes programme has helped him in his sport and life.
