Unity Collins

Training two or three times in the pool and twice a week in a fitness gym is how Special Olympics Te Awamutu swimmer is preparing herself for Abu Dhabi next March when she swims with the New Zealand team at 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Unity is really looking forward to meeting new people and swimming for New Zealand.

Her family are her role models as they respect other people, and are always there to help one another.

Unity would like to have more braille in everyday living as that would make the world a better place.

Since joining Special Olympics Unity feels that she is fitter and faster at swimming and she has met lots more swimmers from across New Zealand and “I met lots of swimmers from Australia when I competed at the last Trans Tasman in Hamilton in 2016”

When she is not training or competing Unity’s hobbies and interests include, singing, dogs, people, music, playing the guitar and bike riding.

Unity’s favourite sports team is the Chiefs rugby team and her favourite sports person is rowing Olympian Lisa Carrington.

In her spare time Unity volunteers at a local Rest home where she sings and plays her guitar and is currently studying for a Maori Ambassador Course.
