Special Olympics Auckland athlete Brett Edge first joined Special Olympics back in 2000, as a Papakura High Schools student.

In his time he has competed in Athletics, Basketball and Football Events and has attended National Games in 2001, 2005 and more recently the 2017 National Summer Games where he played Football.

Competing in Abu Dhabi as a footballer is not the first time Brett has represented New Zealand, as he also played rugby for the South Auckland Kiwis (NZ’s first and only full contact special needs rugby team) and has competed in Japan and Australia against other special needs teams. And in 2017 he played in a match against a touring Welsh special needs rugby team in 2017, who travelled with the British lions tour.

Brett has waited for 18 years to gain a place in the Special Olympics New Zealand football team. This is his favourite sport as he is English and has supported Manchester United since the age of 4. He also supports VfB Stuttgart following his time living in Germany.

Brett is training weekly to the lead up of the games with his goal to become the best midfield player like his role model David Beckham.

Brett is looking forward to everyone in the team learning off each other and thinks playing Unified will be a great learning experience.

When Brett is not playing sports, he likes watching them, walking and going to the movies.
