Morgan James

Since she was young, Wanaka-based Morgan James has spent most of her winters on the snow. In fact, the 21-year-old and her family members are all national snow sport representatives.

While she started on skis, snowboarding is Morgan's passion ("It's more fun than skiing and you can do more tricks").

Morgan's trip to Korea was the first time she had travelled overseas with Special Olympics, Morgan achieved amazing results on the slopes in PyeongChang winning three gold medals in the Intermediate Giant Slalom, Intermediate Slalom and the Intermediate Super G.

Morgan is keeps fit by horseriding. She divides her week between an equestrian centre ("doing dressage on a full-size horse") and work at Wanaka's recycle centre WasteBusters'.

Morgan, her family and Special Olympics Central Otago were very busy with fundraising leading up to the Games, this included joining forces with Snowsports New Zealand and the Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club to hold a movie evening in Wanaka.

A short video of Morgan snowboarding was shown that was produced by Findlay Woods, a young Wanaka movie maker (only 17 years old), called "Golden Goals". The film also features Jeff Wilson, a local sit ski athlete along with Martin Leeper, an amputee who are members of Adaptive Snowsports New Zealand. Enjoy!
