Chelsea Thorn

Papakura-based Chelsea Thorn has been involved with Special Olympics Manukau for the past six years. Initially she trained and competed in tenpin bowling but soon picked up equestrian and found that she had a natural talent for the sport.

In 2012 Chelsea became one of Special Olympics New Zealand’s Global Messengers, a role that has seen her present to the community and take up a leadership position on the Manukau Club Committee and assist with fundraising, working bees, and uniform management. She has mentored fellow athletes in the Club and has been instrumental in encouraging other athletes in the community to join Special Olympics New Zealand.

“I love the friendships I have formed through Special Olympics and taking part in events. I have been part of some great teams and had a lot of learning opportunities, particularly with the Global Messenger programme,” says Chelsea.

“Travelling to the LA2015 World Summer Games is a fantastic opportunity. I’m really looking forward to representing my Club and my country.”

Outside of sport Chelsea works at a harness stables and enjoys listening to relaxing music, bike riding, and visiting her favourite place, the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
