Payroll giving

Payroll giving, an easy way of donating to Special Olympics New Zealand

Payroll giving is a voluntary scheme that allows you to make donations directly from your pay to approved donee organisations. For every dollar you donate, you receive one-third back as a tax credit in the same pay period. The deduction and the credit occur automatically through your employer’s payroll system.

If you are an employer, you can choose to set up payroll giving in your workplace. If you do offer it, it’s up to your employees whether or not they want to participate. If they participate, you deduct the donations from your employees’ pay, reduce your employees’ PAYE by the appropriate tax credit and forward the donations to the chosen donee organisation.

If you are an employee, your employer has the choice whether to make payroll giving an option available to you, and may restrict the choice of charities they will facilitate donations for. Why not encourage your employer to make payroll giving an option and include Special Olympics New Zealand in the payroll giving scheme? Not only can you make donations, but so can your co-workers.

Detailed information about payroll giving for employers and employees is available at the Inland Revenue Department's website.
